No it's not. I'v updated wpml on my website and just copied each folder from ftp. No manipulations have been done with files.
Ask betheme support ( or try to find ) why it's not working with wpml

Make sure you are using the most recent version of this, there was a report by Wordfence recently that mentioned previous versions had a big security hole in them, allowing access to your database, among other issues.
