I really feel for you as it happened to me some time ago.

Now, I use the 2.5 mini drives and keep them in my carry-on luggage.

WD has a great 1tb drive called WD Elements for a reasonable price.

i think i mentioned i had some external drives, i had some in that bag that was lost, but i also had others in all my bags... i do a lot of 'work' and i always make back up files of everything i do, however i goofed, i travel so much i got careless. i put some of my backup files in the same luggage as my laptop, i did have the one of my tablets in another bag, the carry on, as a back up, and the airline only allowed tablets to be used during the flight, so i had one with me... yeah i have a few of those portable wd drives, in all sizes, i prefer the pro models, deluxe and ultra, etc... i have drives by seagate, toshiba and other companies too. some of my files are too important, i even have the little carry cases made especially for the external hard drives, for the added protection they provide... yes, i have zip drives, stick drives, sd cards, micro sd, sdhc cards, some of them are 64 and 128 gigabits each and several other formats... yes, i am often prepared for anything
