Can someone with experience please provide me with info on how to rank and image site.

Do you need to create backlinks for each image on the site?

Is there a easier way to rank an image site?

try to add your images in pinterest. there's a chrome addon that will help you to add all images on a page with a click of a button. there's a wp plugin that show your pinboard to your page, so it can save you few MBs

If you are using wordpress, put keywords as image title, snippet etc... also use an image sitemap for wordpress, there are few around. I guarantee that you will have great success. My images rank even for words as vitamin B, different kind of foods etc... My images rank better than my post titles, so also i have nice number of visits trough images.
