Though technically, you don't get a high pr backlink from these sites, the power of the domains does in fact give your site a little boost. The trend in Google rankings right now is leaning towards Domain Authority...as confirmed by some SEO giants like Alex Becker, Greg Morrison and the guys at Network Authority. So although you are partly correct, (there will be no high pr link per-se), because of the power of some of those domains, some of that domain authority would technically pass through. Not exactly "pure trash" as you call it.
