Question about sub domains to target mul-cities
I just registered a domain, and I want to target multiple cities .

So my question is :how to make the sub domains to look like this

(city.brand.com)

Or do I need to create directories

(brand.com/city/)

Please provide your opinion.

Thank you

RE: Question about sub domains to target mul-cities
Its your call. Using sub domains means that you have to manage multiple websites (assuming you are using wordpress?)

If you are going with directories, you can host on one domain and set up a directory for each city but then you need to set up access by city/directory if you don't want anyone to see whats in your "other citties".

Hope that makes sense!

I've seen quite a few websites go with the first option - like about.com, buzzfeed.com, huffingtonpost.com etc.

RE: Question about sub domains to target mul-cities
If you want to operate all cities from one site it's good to go with sub-directories. If you create subdomains you may need to connect all those manually and need to do seperate seo for all subdomains.

RE: Question about sub domains to target mul-cities
Brand.com/city-name this is the consensus from trusted SEO companies not those aspiring one but ones like Register.com and 29prime. I personally do this and it works well and each page is ranked by your keyword for that city but make sure each page has different content such as a different description.

I have a local service business and I ranked my site for multiple keywords in surrounding cities near my business.

I rank over my competitors in the local area and only out ranked by 1 franchised company.

RE: Question about sub domains to target mul-cities
If you have a vague idea of how to write some basic PHP, you can do either domain.com/city or city.domain.com with about the same effort. Anyone who claims otherwise doesn't really know what they're talking about :)

That said, you're better off going for domain.com/city, as your juice will be less diluted - you also get the benefit of faster page loads due to less DNS lookups if people navigate between cities on your site (this isn't really a huge problem.. but, every bit counts sometimes eh?)
