==================== In my 15 years of performing SEO, I’ve used a lot of different methods and tools to find the data I need to get ranked. Here is my tried-and-true method I use and the new tool I use to extract and interpret the data I need. (Launched Feb 2023) Niche Research Sometimes I already have a niche, or a client, so I know right away where to start my keyword research. But there are times I am looking for a new niche or content idea, and I could use a little help seeing what the trend data for keywords or general niche categories is without going to a dozen different websites and wasting time. This brings me to the tool I will be using for everything I am doing in this thread, kwrocket.com. Promo link: https://kwrocket.com/promo In kwrocket I can start out getting some ideas to research. In this case I had been thinking about the supplements niche. After checking some different supplements ideas I found the “probiotics” subniche as trending up. ![]() Keyword Research The next step is to find out whether there are keyword opportunities in “probiotics.” So I clicked into the keyword research section and put in my seed keyword “probiotics” to see what would come back. I preset to pull 1000 keywords. ![]() I found several high volume keywords with lower and moderate keyword difficulty (KD.) This is good news because a well optimized page with some good backlinks has a chance at ranking with KD below 30. Now, I’ve always been a fan of keyword golden ratio (KGR) as an INDICATOR of opportunity for ranking. Of course, KGR doesn’t matter if your page isn’t well-optimized, but it does help narrow focus very early in a project. I go ahead and run KGR on some of the lower KD keywords to see what those metrics look like, and if there are enough keywords to start building a site. ![]() I am seeing several opportunities here. Even if most of the keywords are branded, I have found it works very well to write “review” or “comparison” articles for those brands. Generally the volume on branded review products is about 20% of the brand volume. So if “bio tech probiotic” has volume of 9900, then it probably has about somewhere between 1000 and 2000 searches for reviews or comparisons. This is good volume. Ranking Analyzer I decide to dig into some of these keywords more closely to make sure other metrics prove out the opportunity. So I take one of the keywords “bio tech probiotic” and run it through the Ranking Analyzer in kwrocket. This tool brings the top 10 ranking URLs for this keyword and compares their basic metrics. I am not disappointed. ![]() As you can see there are several pages with DA and PA under 30. This is what I am looking for. When there are several pages like this I know that with a well optimized page I can rank. Some of these are ranking without very many inbound links or referring domains. Onpage Optimizer One more check I will do is to check out one or two of the weaker URLs to see how good their onpage technical metrics are. I grab the “wellnessworks” URL and I put it into the OnPage Optimizer in kwrocket. ![]() It scores very well across the board, so I know that the key is good onpage SEO to why this page ranks despite weaker URL metrics. There is a legend on the results page to help you decipher each metric. Backlink Inspector The last thing I want to check is the backlink strength of the competitor. I put this URL into the backlink inspector tool in kwrocket and it gives me the backlink data. ![]() The backlinks are not overly powerful, since the PA is less than 30 for each, so there is definitely a good opportunity with this keyword. Even if a few were powerful (.edu or .gov) it would still be a good keyword. Related Keywords Before I begin working on a page, it’s a requirement to know what the related keywords would be on this page. Obviously we need to include these to potentially capture lots of extra traffic. In this example, I will have to inspect these because I do not yet know if this product is for pets or humans. I will likely need to look for more related keywords once I know. ![]() Content Analzyer Once I have these, I want to know what semantic keywords should be included in my content. It’s also good to have an idea if they should be in headings or in content, or both. Kwrocket also tells us that quickly as well. I input “bio tech probiotic” and it goes out to examine the content in the top 10 results. After a minute or so, it brings back this helpful report. ![]() This report is sorted by average usage of each semantic word, which makes it easy to see what common words should be used in my article. It gives total word counts for each URL, as well as the average word count for all the URLs. Also, this provides a clear view of semantics that are used in H tags in the content. I now have the data I need to construct a ranking article, knowing I have an excellent chance of ranking. Once the article and page are published I can run it back through Content Analyzer and compare my page head-to-head with ranking URLs. I can do the same with Onpage Optimizer to check metrics head-to-head. This helps with me with any improvements or changes I need to make right away. Some other notes: 1 – Google has been looking at deeper sites as a sign of E-E-A-T (Experience Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness.) Be sure to include content for words you may not rank for right away (higher KD.) For example I will include articles for “probiotics” even though my site will not rank for that standalone word. 2 – Interlinking is huge. Make sure longer articles link out to your other articles on the site. 3 – I add images and video when I can 4 – Put pages you believe can rank in your navigation. It’s a good signal to Google that the page is important. About KWRocket: You can get a discount for this tool at https://kwrocket.com/promo *This is a newly launched tool. Sometimes there is a glitch where the page does not refresh and you may need to manually refresh the page to see your data. |
