How to Apply Persuasion/Influence Concepts?
Does anybody know how to apply persuasion/influence concepts in real life?

For example, I have these goals:
- I want to have sex with her.
- I want to sell this pen to him.
- I want my mom to eat regularly.

And... the next step is?

Any books/reference materials?

Thank you in advance.

RE: How to Apply Persuasion/Influence Concepts?
You have not only asked the question but have also provided the answer,
http://bestblackhatforum.com/Thread-GET-...ion-Course

Quote:People will do anything for those who encourage their dreams, justify their failures, allay their fears, confirm their suspicions, help them throw rocks at their enemies, ...

And the extended version (mp3) adds:

... validate and fascinate them.

Blindly charging in and expecting the person to buy into your narrative is a sure-shot recipe.... for failure!

Consider for example the need to sell a pen:
Assumption #1: It is not a million dollar ultra luxury status symbol from Aurora Diamante/Caran d'Ache/Montblanc, ...! If so, then the clientele and way to approach would differ.
Assumption #2: You are trying to sell the pen based on the brand value as well as differentiators and not as a commodity product.

If you just go and ask him, "Hey dude, in the next 5 minutes, tell me what all do you need from a pen and over the next hour let me tell you how the pen I'm selling ticks all the boxes", then it is very likely the person would ask you to get lost! Rather, if you are seen helping them (instead of being seen as someone who is just trying to sell to and profit from them), your chances of success are a lot higher.

Product features - Do some research on what are the features (status symbol, guaranteed to work even after being held upside down, smudge-free, uninterrupted writing up to, say 1000m, etc, if being sold as a commodity then cost should be low enough to not pinch the pocket) the pen you are selling provides as well as how it stacks up against pens from competing vendors. Also, use a pen of the same brand yourself.

What are the user's requirements?
You need to do background research to first learn and understand the other person's needs. This would vary from case to case, else you may become victim of stereotype bias. e.g. assuming that a pen collector would only collect limited edition luxury pens, someone who needs a pen occasionally to take notes would care less about the quality of the pen, etc could prove detrimental.

Instead One must observe and notice both explicit and implicit needs.

A possible approach - Strike up a conversation, during which you ask if you can borrow a pen. If successful, use it for jotting something on a piece of paper and then remark on some aspect of the pen, veer the conversation there.

What advantages would the pen you are selling provide the user which match their needs - e.g. want a snazzy looking pen and the pen your selling has a unique look and feel, wants to not lose pens all the time (pen comes equipped with a bluetooth tracker which also sounds an alarm if the pen is more than 3m away from the mobile), pens they use smudge a lot (your pen has a patented smudge-free technology), etc.

Now the more important question is - would you be willing to or even want to spend so much time and energy to sell a pen?

Special note: To make your mom eat regularly - (not to sound stereotypical) here the tables are slightly turned as the person whom you are trying to persuade also has your best interests in mind.
- You would not eat your food unless she also eats.
- You could try to convince her that not eating regularly would also affect you (you are worried and are hence not able to concentrate and this could adversely impact your work - something which she would not want).
- Claim your friends are angry with you as you are not able to ensure she eats regularly.
- Claim no one is buying pens as they all want a certificate of good maternal eating practices from the seller ;-)
