But my advice is:

Never get married in the first place.

(The following statements are my opinion and reflect current confiscatory practices prevalent in the USA)

This advice is specifically aimed at those who either are self-employed or plan to be, and intend to make a ton of wealth in the process.

There is absolutely no function that marriage serves in this current world economy that cannot be served better by simple contracts (or even an LLC).

And if marriage is the only possibility, then a prenup.
Definition. prenup. Agreement between 2 spouses that spells out how money will be distributed in the case of a divorce/separation.

If a candidate won't marry you without a prenup..., NEXT.

One of the primary causes of business failure is due to divorce issues. I am still currently married (and only the one time), but my wife was thrilled to marry me with a prenup. If we had to do it all over again, we would forgo the marriage track and just have a partnership contract. Easier and better deal for the wife (contracts are continuously and easily negotiable...)

The self-employed (or owners of large businesses) have the greatest risk presented to them by current marriage law.

I've 3 (married) friends who've independently hit it (really) big in marketing, after years of moderate results. That is usually the way success works in marketing... Within months of hitting 7 figures, each respective wife filed for divorce. The real tragedy was for the two living in California. No mercy and every judgment went to the wife.

Sure, just a limited sampling, I know. And probably just a coincidence.

Right.

Just think before you make a limited payoff deal with your future wealth.
