What Does Huffington Post and Allfacebook.com Know And Do On Their Websites That Should Be On Yours?

Facebook announced their support for the Open Graph (og) protocol at f8 in April 2010 and those that caught onto the power of it quietly started using it in the back of their websites and blogs.

Everyone (should) know about the Facebook “Like” button and the “Comments” social plugin (and should be using it on their blogs and sites) but did you know that you need to add Open Graph meta data to improve their effectiveness?

Facebook needs more information about the “graph” to show it in relevant Facebook searches. BTW, these Facebook searches are powered by Bing since October of 2010 and there has been a growth in Bing’s search market compared to Google’s slow decline. There is some speculation out there that the Open Graph meta data on your blogs and sites will have an influence on Bing’s search results in future.

So have you started using the Facebook Social Plugins on your websites and blogs, and also those of your customers? With around 550 million Facebook users, well optimized wall comments and likes are the key to getting found on Facebook.

But are all “likes” created equal? Well with Open Graph meta tags used by Facebook to differentiate, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

Facebook Search now analyze the web page or blog post that the link comes from to see if there is any relevant information it can use to better serve it to their “social graph”. That means it will connect information from various websites onto the Walls of Facebook users based on their “social graph” and the meta data on those web pages. The "social graph" is how they are connected to friends based on "likes" and "comments" amongst others.

It increases the likelihood of showing your website or blog, if properly tagged, to people who have an interest in those tagged items as part of your social connections of social graph. It can now share information from millions of websites with Facebook as the central hub for that information. There are currently more that 250 million people connect that to Facebook from external websites per month. See this staggering information from a recent Hubspot report (www.hubspot.com)

This is all well and great but this seems really complex and hard to do. I have long forgotten about graphs, meta tags and html coding that seems to go with this.

How Do We Simplify This?

I first came across the Facebook Open Graph while I was doing work for an offline client. They don't want a Facebook Page as they already have a website, a blog, a newsletter and a Twitter account and they were struggling to find content to put on all of these. They are in the financial services sector and also had concerns over who's identity will be linked to a Facebook Page if they had one.

But they had a Facebook "Like" button on their website (which turned out to be a WordPress blog) and also on the CEO's blog. We saw that the number of new visitors to their site correlated with the number of "likes" for a certain period. We extended the experiment and added a "comment" box to the news pages. Links were sent out in their newsletter to existing customers. We were amazed at the social commenting of their customers but we were ecstatic with the number of new visitors to the site. We knew it was from Facebook viral traffic as we did NO OTHER marketing.

So I started adding Open Graph tags and our Facebook traffic increased EVEN MORE. We were really pleased with the results. But I had to do it for them as it required some HTML understanding. They would create the post or news article and I would edit it.

So I looked around for WordPress plugins that could handle the "Like" button, the "Comment" box and the Open Graph tags as I found that they need to work together as a unit. I tried a few like button and comment box options but they seemed to clash with each other. I could not let a client loose on this.

I decided to create a simple WordPress Plugin that will do ALL THREE and that I can get my offline client to use, without me being there to fix their posts.

Facebook Social Engagement Optimizer
(or Facebook Search Engine Optimization if you want [Image: smile.gif])

MaxFBSeo is a WordPress Plugin that includes:
  • Facebook "Like" Button setup for Open Graph
  • Facebook "Comment" Box setup for Open Graph
  • Open Graph Business Information setup
  • Open Graph Post and Page meta data setup and updates
  • OAuth 2.0 ready
With MaxFBSeo you can get as much (or even more) Facebook traffic from your blog or website as what you can get from a Facebook Page.

What's even better is that you DON'T NEED HTTPS/SSL or any of the additional security and costs that Facebook Page will have from 1 October.

MaxFBSeo is easy to set up and even easier to use for every single page or post. By the way, if you use WordPress as a shopping cart and you have "like" buttons or "comment" boxes on every product page, Open Graph tags are an absolute must for additional traffic.
