RE: [GET] WORDLE
@sikandar: Thank you for chiming in --- now I have an alternate program to use, thanks to you. Every now-and-again, I have a bit of a problem with TechSmith Capture (log in issues that stem from confusion of my older, free account and the newer, paid one. Or the program is temporarily down for an update. Other than that, I'm quite happy with it. Yet, it always helps to have a back-up plan, so I will look into the free screenhunter software and imgur.com for hosting my images.

@10der1: I am so glad you made it back to this thread. And, of course, you're welcome, friend --- glad I could help. You may want to look first into sikandar's suggestions. His image looks great and his advice is so straight-forward. Unlike my own.

And yes, it's always best to do a trial of a software before you invest, if one is available.

And please, don't forget: Delete some of your older PMs to clear up space for new ones. I have had people send me a PM asking for help with something but when I try to reply, they've either met their PM quota or have turned off that function. Especially if you post a REQ thread, it's critical to have your private messaging enabled because someone may want to share a link with you that they're reluctant to post on the public forum, for obvious reasons.

RE: [GET] WORDLE
@10der1: It probably was me, sending a head's up for you to check back on this thread for something I posted in response to help you. I don't keep messages (sent or received) so I can't be sure.

In looking at your post #46, the image did not show. Instead, it's that little blue square I mentioned in my earlier reply. And since I don't know which tool you used or what you did, there's no way I can offer a certain solution to correct the error.

I haven't yet used the free screenhunter screen capture software or the imgur.com site that sikander mentioned for hosting (uploading) images to, so I cannot tell you how to use those tools.

But here are some questions you can answer to backtrack and help trouble-shoot what could have gone wrong and maybe correct it:

#1 - Did you upload your image from the screen capture to a website that hosts images on its server? I mentioned TechSmith Capture; sikander used imgur.com. In using screen capture software or apps, you get a few options to size and add to the image (ex: annotations, point out sections with arrows, highlight text, etc.) before you upload the image to a server. I don't know how imgur works but TechSmith Capture generates a link I can copy and paste into a browser. That brings up the image in my browser screen and I can then right-click it and select Copy Image Link (there's the option to Copy Image, too, but that's not the link I need);

OR...

#1a - (If you grabbed an existing image from elsewhere online) Did you right-click on the image and select the option to Copy Image Link?

Here's something to remember: THINK LINK. You must post an actual link from a site that hosts (contains) your image --- that's the website URL you need. Do not choose Copy Image because that won't give you the full website URL you need.

#2 - Does your website link end with an appropriate image file extension? If the link doesn't begin with "http(s):"" and end in either: jpg, gif or png, the image will not show properly.

NOTE: It appears that may have been what you did, which is why the image is broken in the browser.

And lastly,

#3 - Did you use the opening [img] and closing [/img] image tags positioned at the beginning and end of the website URL? (This is the site link you need to copy/paste from the image host site I mentioned at #1)

If you have questions or need further assistance with this, send me a PM. That way, I can get direct feedback from you that might explain what part of this process is getting in your way of the results you want.

RE: [GET] WORDLE
@10der1 (and anyone else who can use this): I know this is a Wordle thread but I'm trying to help folks who want to include images to their posts to do so. So hopefully, this post will help and the thread will go back to Wordle discussions and solves.

I just found a very nice, straight-forward YouTube video on how to use Imgur (pronounced image-r).

Imgur is nice for people on a budget who want the benefit of hosting for their images but don't want to pay for the privilege. However, like anything that's free, Imgur has some limitations. For example, you are restricted to uploading only 50 images per hour to your free account. For most people, that's more than enough but if you're a heavy user, you'll need to look elsewhere.

First, I'm going to share the quick-and-simple video. Then, only if you like a lot of detail, I will attempt to rehash for you below what was covered in the video. You are free to check it out if you like but I'm sure you can grasp what needs to be done from the video alone.

HOW TO SIGN UP FOR AN IMGUR ACCOUNT AND
UPLOAD AN IMAGE TO POST TO A BB OR FORUM

Magic Button :
Code:
.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmxgVWf4bhs
.

The guy on this video does a great job of covering a lot of territory in a condensed span of time. I viewed it a couple of times to get the gist of it so that I could do a write-up of what he covered.

So, if you prefer to follow written instructions versus watching a video, I've got you covered.

Here's a run-down of the video you can use to set up your account and get your images to show up in a BBHF post, step-by-step:

1. You've got to have an Imgur account. If you don't have one, go here to register a new account:

IMGUR - REGISTER AN ACCOUNT
Magic Button :
Code:
.
https://imgur.com/register
.

REGISTER YOUR ACCOUNT: Complete the online registration form. It looks like this:

REGISTER A FREE IMGUR ACCOUNT

2. Register your account with these steps:

- Create a username: If you can't think of one, use your BBHF username.

- Enter a valid email address: If you have a Google e-mail address you use on BBHF, you could use that or get/create another one. Do not use a throw-away email.

- Create a password: Create a new password. It should be something you can remember but is hard for others to come up with. It is best to use a password management tool like Roboform (or other software) to create a strong password that cannot be cracked easily. Roboform allows you to integrate its app with your browser and once you log in to your account, it works seamlessly to fill in the passwords for sites you must log in to access.

- Re-enter the password: Type the password again.

- Enter a phone number: This must be a working phone you have access to that can receive text messages. So a landline phone won't work. Be sure you have immediate access to the phone because Imgur will send you a code via text. You will type that code into a field online to verify your phone number.

NOTE: There is a text link on the form you can click to read more about why you need to verify your phone.

LOG IN TO YOUR ACCOUNT:

- Log into your Imgur account (the same link I posted at #1 above) using the email and password you created;

- Verify your phone number by checking for the code that was sent via text to the number you listed on your account;

- Get the code from the text message and type it onto the form. Once the code is verified, you should be let you into your new account.

SETTING THINGS UP INSIDE
YOUR IMGUR ACCOUNT

NOTE: The first section you will see in the browser inside your account is the images on WRSphotodump, which is the area of the Imgur community where some members save their images publicly for all to see and comment or vote on (more about this later).

3 - Click on the section in the upper right of the screen (WRSphotodump) and in the drop down menu, choose Select Album. You need to have an album set up to store all of your images and since you haven't already set one up, you will see a large exclamation point (!) in the middle of the window with the option to set up a new album.

4 - Click the blue New Album text link in the upper right of that box to create a new album.

5 - IMPORTANT: Change the default album setting for your new album from "public" to "hidden" or "secret." If you don't do this, all of the images in your album will be saved automatically to imgur's photodump.

As I mentioned earlier, the WRSphotodump is where all images from albums not "hidden" or "secret" will automatically become publicly viewable by others on the web, who can then post comments or vote on them. If that's okay with you, then leave it set to "public" however, most Imgur users will prefer to keep their images hidden unless they decide, on an individual basis, whether to share an image or not.

Here are your album settings options:

- "Public" - This option allows anyone on the internet to see your album by going to your account page located at: https://wpsphotodump.imgur.com. A public post is shared with the Imgur community and is available for commenting, voting and will appear in your user profile. Public posts also appear in Imgur search results.

- "Hidden" - This option hides your album from your account page but it is still accessible by use of the direct link. A hidden post is not shared with the general Imgur community and can only be accessed via the URL. Hidden posts cannot be searched, will not receive comments or votes, and will not appear in your user profile. Hidden posts are never entirely private because they can always be accessed by other people with access to the URL.

Both public and hidden posts can be found in your consolidated user profile, which is accessible at imgur.com/user/[username]. When others view your profile, they will see only your public posts.

- "Secret" - This option means that you are the only person who can see the album and you can only see it if you are logged into your imgur account.

THIS WAS INTERESTING...

NOTE: I've seen Reddit posts where people were concerned that their images (called posts) set to "secret" in their album were shared with a few friends but those images received far more "views" and the number of people they sent the link to.

Someone else cleared it up by explaining that Imgur counts reloading the browser as a separate view, so if the friends who received those album images viewed them on multiple times (on different dates or times), it added another "view" to the total count. Imgur does not discern IP addresses or cookies, so page reloads are tallied as a new (and another) "view." So it wasn't that the links were being used by other people the album owner did not originally share them with --- it's just the way Imgur counts "views."

Okay, so moving right along...

6 - Click on the green Create New Post button in the upper left of the screen.

7 - Click on the Upload Images button.

8 - Click on the Browse button to find the image(s) you want to upload to your album.

9 - Select the image(s) and click Open to load the image(s) from your computer into your Imgur account's album.

NOTE: You can select a single image or multiple images by pressing and holding the CTRL key on your keyboard as you click multiple images.

10 - In the drop down menu at the top-right of the screen, click on the WSphotodump text and from the drop down list, choose Images to show the images in your gallery. Click on the image from your list of images to bring up one you want to use.

Click the image again to bring up a larger picture of it in the middle of the screen.

IMPORTANT: When the presenter says "This is the most important page..." (at around the 4:00 minute mark in the video) pay particular attention because this is how to get the link you need to put in the BBHF text editor for your image to show in your forum post.

11 - Click the Share with the Community button from the gallery (this may take a moment if you are loading multiple images, so be patient).

12 - Copy the link from the area titled: BBCODE (the blue button) since that is the link you need for posting your image to a bulletin board, community or forum, like BBHF.

IMPORTANT: Notice that the link already has the opening and closing image tags I wrote about in an earlier post, so you don't need to add them. Be sure to grab the entire link, including the [img] through to the [/img] tags from your Imgur account and post that link into the text editor on BBHF.

Optionally, you can use the text editor's formatting tool to center the image on the page by first selecting the entire image with your mouse and, while it is hightllighted, click the centered lines in the formatting area. This places your image in the middle of the page.

ANOTHER WAY TO DO IT:

Alternately, you can add the center alignment opening and closing tags (as illustrated below) to the image link you copied from Imgur so that when you paste the link into the text editor, and click the PREVIEW POST button, the image will be centered in the middle of the browser page.

NATIONAL PRETZEL DAY IMAGE

I grabbed this image from a website by typing National Pretzel Day in Google, clicking on the Images to bring up all images and choosing the one I wanted.

I right-clicked on it and selected COPY IMAGE LINK. Here's the link:
Magic Button :
Code:
.
https://images.radio.com/aiu-media/GettyImages1215751890-897b1e7d-e56d-4860-b90a-8092e2c232ea.jpg
.

As you can see, it is a URL (it has the preceding "https://") and it is a proper image link because the link ends with an image extension (.jpg) so this should work as intended.

To get this to show on a BBHF post and be centered in the middle of the browser page, I have two ways to do that:

#1 - Go to the BBHF text editor and click the centered lines in the menu options for formatting the post. It's the 5th icon from the left at the top of the text input field. Then I can copy the link and paste it into the editor. Lastly, I need to put the closing tags to the link. There will be a red text area in the upper right of the editor pane for that purpose. Click it and that adds the code that closes the link properly so it will display in your post.

#2 - In a text editor (Notepad, Wordpad or the BBHF's text editor) paste the image link above. Then add the opening and closing code to center the image on the page. That consists of the word align=centered [in brackets] at the beginning of the image link and the closing tag, which is /align [in brackets] at the end of the image link.

So here's what that looks like (I included explanations to show you what each part of the link is for):

LAYNA'S NOTE: Only AFTER this image was uploaded to my TechSmith account and added to my post did I realize I misspelled jpeg (it shows as jpep). So I am aware of that --- and I'll ask you to forgive that slip-up. I'm entirely too exhausted tonight to re-do that image, so please ignore it. You know what I meant.

Also, it appears in my image that there is a space between the tags but there isn't. So when you hand code, make sure the opening and closing brackets for all of the instructions like text alignment, image links, underscores, italics, etc. all touch one another back-to-back and have no gaps between them.

You can change the alignment to equal "left" or "right" or "justify" when doing hand-written code. But the purpose of the forum's text editor is to make all those options available with the click of the mouse.

I am including the hand coding instructions because I have had occasions when the forum's text editor was entirely missing the menu for some strange reason (probably my tired computer). Knowing how to code your posts manually can be a major benefit when auto options are not available.

I hope some of this helps you in learning to use your free Imgur account to host your images and post them online.

UPDATE

@10der1: Once again, I tried to send you a PM to alert you to this post. I know we were communicating via PM about getting your images to show on forum posts and I said I would get back to you when I looked deeper into using Imgur because I don't use that. And once more, your inbox appears full or you've reached your "messaging limits" so my message can't get through.

Unless you get back to this thread, you won't see this.
