There actually have been a bunch of different iterations of HTML.

HTML 4.1 was the version before 5, and some older phones use a version of HTML called "Mobile Profile" that disables some abilities, and even older versions use a technology called WAP.

[/quote]Its named HTML5 Because its HTML version 5 and there were previous versions of it such as 1 - 4 now 5. HTML5 is not an extension its just naming, Just like saying PS4 and would you call PS4 a PS2?

BTW HTML stands for -- Hyper Text Markup Language, 5 stands for Version 5
