Victor Segno (born 1870), President of Chirological College of California, was an American "mentalist" and "psychical leader" whose teachings had much in common with Christian Science. He was the operator of the American Institute of Mentalism as well as the Segnogram Publishing Co. in Los Angeles.

A thought from the brain of one person travels on despite all resistance until it is taken up by the brain or brains that are in harmony with the mind from which it was sent; for in the domain of mind distance or density of matter are not recognised, says Victor Segno, therefore one portion of physical matter is as easily influenced and controlled as another, for all men are made of the same materials and governed by the same force.

By the use of mentalism we not only control our own physical being, but we can also form and control that of others. Every thought that a man thinks brings into action certain brain cells and exercises some physical tissue, nerve, or muscle. This exercise produces a minute change in the construction of the tissue, therefore, it is only necessary to have a sufficient number of thoughts on a certain subject to completely change the physical and mental organisation of the man. It is by this process, as our great psychical leader, Victor Segno, teaches, that the wonderful changes are made from sickness to health, from failure to success.

We can send a message without wires and we can send a thought message without speech. The electric currents used in telegraphy cause waves in the atmosphere. These waves spread until they reach a receiver, where they are taken up and fulfill their purpose. Thought also causes magnetic waves in the atmosphere. They travel until they are taken up not only by one person, but possibly by thousands.

In order to support his research and public educational activities Segno had no qualms with harnessing the power of mentalism for profit, sending out numerous fliers in which he offered to twice daily send out a "success wave". Apparently Segno's business model was highly successful as he was able to build a large L.A. estate at Belmont and Kane that was featured in The LA Times.

Despite the numerous success stories of Segno's clients and their satisfaction with him, this did not insulate Segno from those who sought to portray him as a cheap charlatan. One "snarky" British book reviewer received a Segno flier which stated: ""If we do not hear from you in reply to this letter we shall conclude that we have been misinformed as to your ambitions and desire to succeed." The British reviewer's smug reply to this flier was: "We wonder how our name got on the 'sucker list.'" Another elite British magazine author who received the flier skewered Segno stating: "Even to my mean intelligence, it becomes plain that the more fools—I mean, members—that this ’cute Yankee secures, the greater will be his Success."

Somewhat surprisingly, even in the modern era many bloggers have taken to the internet heap ridicule this now obscure turn of the century mentalist as a charlatan, many without bothering to read his many books on the subject of mentalism (which has many similarities to Christian Science and the New Thought Movement).

In "The Law of Mentalism" Segno writes:

"In acquiring the information contained in this book, I lay no claim to having possessed a knowledge or power superior to that possessed by many other persons. I simply claim that after many years of close, conscientious study, to have touched a chord in Nature that responded and revealed to me the law which governs all intelligence, life and the change called death. After thoroughly testing this great power, I have decided to give the knowledge to the world. I do so with the full conviction that it will revolutionize, to a more or less degree, the life of every person who reads it."

Assuming you do not lack the requisite "ambitions and desire to succeed" this book will be well worth its perusal.
