As one who has purchased several of Alan's books (and attended one of his many workshops), I'm struck by how much I enjoy reading some of the same advice I've read in his other books or listened to on his cds, coupled with new topics and new examples. I'm extremely happy with The Consulting Bible because it adds depth and breadth and fresh takes. Not many authors can do this. Alan has a conversational style and freely writes elsewhere about how few drafts he writes before final submission. This is a very good thing, because it's like hearing him speak to you and explaining topics you've heard before but differently. Repetition of the right material leads to increased learning and understanding, and if applied, successful results. Now there is quite a bit of new information here and I'm not trying to suggest otherwise. Section IV on consulting methodologies especially is concise and on-target. His advice on ethics in Chapter 13 is needed and should be required reading.
What I like about this book is there are no wasted words, and not just practical advice, but proven advice from the best solo consultant in the business. I remember thinking that if a consultant followed nothing more than what Alan wrote in Getting Started in Consulting, he or she would do just fine. However, Alan is not interested in our doing just that. Otherwise he'd have written How to Get By in Consulting. He wants to see consultants achieve the success they desire and deserve for all the hours they put in, and if he has to keep hammering us until we get it right, he'll do just that. And that's fine. The Consulting Bible is grounded in reality, it covers the real world of what consultants do (or should do)and if we actually use the material we'll be as successful as we want to be.
