Ship of Fools: How a Selfish Ruling Class Is Bringing America to the Brink of Revolution

Quote:TC's new book explores an omnipresent fact of contemporary American life—the deep divide between elites of both political parties and the general public they should be serving. The book recalls Charles Murray's COMING APART in its general theme. The argument is not linear/sequential, but rather thematic, with individual chapters illustrating the central conception. Some of these are familiar, e.g., the 'environmentalists' whose cities are covered with used needles and human feces but whose hearts are pure because of their dedication to abstract notions. Their personal environment is filthy but they are trying to save the planet, not the actual streets on which they live. These same sorts of individuals fly on private planes and cruise on 450-foot yachts but attempt to constrain the daily lives of individuals, either through regulations or the shutting down of industries. The delineation of the effects of wind turbines on the lives of birds, including highly-protected species—illustrates the issue with great point and specificity.

There are some surprising or at least less-common examples: Paul Ryan's complicity with elites and an extended discussion of Chelsea Clinton's unjustified but easily explained rise to wealth and prominence. The propensity for beginning wars—by both the left, the right and the neocons—is explored at length. Bill Kristol will not be pleased by TC's ruminations.

The jacket art, title and subtitle suggest that this could be a political screed, but it is not. The argument is empirical, thoughtful and anchored in hard facts and common sense. It is not as 'witty' and humorous as the publisher might have us believe. It is wry and skeptical and captures the rhythms of TC's speaking voice.

The book's subtext is that the current state of affairs led, as day follows night, to the election of President Trump. The plight of working people was so obvious (and their distance from the sheltered but highly lucrative experience of elites so clear) that DT's success was entirely predictable. The fact that his success was so unpredictable to the elites merely (i.e. totally) underscores the thesis that the detachment of the elites from common, dare I say, American experience is undeniable. In the book's final pages, TC argues for greater democracy as a beginning step in addressing the problem, but he is under no illusions that the difficulty of achieving that democracy is compounded by the complicity of the universities and the media in propounding the abstract arguments of the elites.

Prepare to complete the book in one or two quick sittings.

This looks very interesting I expect these comments could apply to Elite's globally the real people have ceased to matter and now they are just pawns in the game. To be manipulated, and used. A huge push back is coming some where in the world and it's going to really ugly.

You know the divide is widening when you have one party in virtually every country sticking up for the people (whilst you know once in power that will all change) and the other wanting to keep the status quo. Be it Republican/ Democrat- Leave/Remain Pro/Anti this that or the other. The manipulation starts at school and continues through the education system.

Great share and reps given. Love these kind of books for a quick relax after work.
