Learn to write plot twists like the pros!

The most difficulty most fiction writers face is getting started.

And once they start, they often struggle to keep their story strong.

Two of the most effective ways to write a great story is to use a prompt (an idea to get your story started and get your creative juices flowing) and to write an unexpected ending (a plot twist) that could shock and surprise your reader.

Surprises can be exciting; especially in fiction!

Your reader doesn't want to be bored, knowing exactly what's going to happen to flat, listless characters they don't even care about.

SPICE UP YOUR STORY!

Create characters that count!

Make your heroes human. Give them traits of strength and weakness your reader can relate to and feel for.

Make your villains outright vicious. Or give them an ordinary persona that slowly morphs to expose their innately evil nature.

Put these characters at odds with one another and let something crucial be at stake for them both.

And the cherry-on-top...?

Well, that's the plot twist!

You can twist that plot so that the least harmless of your story people could end up showing a dark and evil side. Or the character with "skeletons in the closet" can end being the story's hero that saves the day.

There's a way to craft a clever plot twist so that your reader won't feel like you quickly pulled a fast one over on them.

Nobody likes to feel cheated.

And in this share, I offer some resources to help you learn to use story idea gems to get your story out of your head and onto paper.

And how to become familiar with plot twists that can take your story to the next level.

Your story should keep your readers riveted until the very end. And even then, you want them to both think and talk about it long after turning the last page.

A well-crafted story with real human characters in a dynamic situation will do that.

Add a well-crafted plot twist (unexpected ending) and your story will be the one that gets everybody --- readers and the media --- talking about.

That's the stuff of best-selling fiction!

RE: [GET] START THAT STORY! TWIST THAT PLOT!
Nice share Layna! I'm a full-time writer now but find Derek Murphy to be a pinheaded pompous asshat. Like better (or at least more successful) writers than me, I write into the dark (pantser). This feckwit disparages writers like us (and I'm in very good company) and calls us lazy.
Rant over. Nothing to see here.

RE: [GET] START THAT STORY! TWIST THAT PLOT!
@BlackTopHat: Thanks for sharing your opinion. I had to go back and see who Derek Murphy is and whether anything of his was in the share. I see now that I included a single title in the bundle --- The Plot Dot. And I did that exclusively because it was in my Kindle library and was about the subject of story plotting.

I don't know Derek Murphy from Daniel Boone but... okay.

I don't doubt that Murphy hasn't earned your view of him but Murphy's stuff makes up only a small part of my share. Don't you think it's "painting with a broad stroke" to say "Nothing to see here"?

Still, I had to go looking for Derek Murphy to see if I might feel the same way you do; albeit with a lot less exposure to his writings since you're more familiar with him.

And from the little I read, I can see how you feel.

Now, I'm not talking about the writing books he's put out. I went to blog posts and other more personal writings to see if I could get a sense of who he is as a person.

He has a PhD in literature, so he's no dummy.

Yet some of his more personal writings make him look like a pompous jerk. He was a designer who morphed into a writer and does mostly young adult (YA) fantasy fiction in between stints as a writing coach and marketing guru. He has books on Amazon and tons of blog posts and YouTube videos.

But in the age of the internet, aren't we all coaches and gurus and influencers?

Or wannabes?

I read that Derek Murphy feels Writer's Block was "invented by the writing community to explain their laziness."

WOW.

(There goes that word --- laziness.)

And by his own admission, he actively "avoids human interaction."

I'm sure that makes his customers feel special.

In all honesty, most creative types tend to embrace "alone time." It's the best time to come up with great ideas or to get words onto paper. But for him to put in writing that he avoids human interaction (hopefully, a tongue-in-cheek comment) simply suggests that he may not know enough about real human interaction to write stories with great characters.

Maybe he's clueless that his attempt at sarcasm or wry language comes across more as pompous idiocy.

He's probably everything you think he is.

But I hope you can see past your distaste for Murphy and find some value in my share because there is "something to see here" OTHER THAN Plot Dot.

Thanks

RE: [GET] START THAT STORY! TWIST THAT PLOT!
Layna, my "nothing to see here" referred to my rant, not your share. I apologize that I didn't make that more clear.
