@J3zr33l:
There is absolutely NOTHING in the 'natural' (offline) world that can be compared sanely against any online medium. Therefore to INSIST upon 'natural death' is a completely un-fitting idea here. Everything here is like posting on craigslist, really; Maybe ~10% (at most !!) are posts with actual content, with the other ~90% pushing those DOWN. In particular, the threads here at BBHF with freely shared content are vastly outnumbered by the BSOs, GBs, Requests, and others too, I'm sure. This share and others by me lately have been for ebooks - and mostly very recent ones. The member who gets this share has it forever after, in just a few minutes. I make my shares in the true spirit of sharing - and if folks want also to give gifts of Rep, that is very kind of them - but NOT asked for or required by me. In actuality I would prefer very much that this forum would have a 'Thanks' button along with the option to require that single click to make content visible - but it doesn't have that. This is the next closest thing to that function. I am not trying to force anyone to do anything - so if you and others like yourself find that having to make a reply is too daunting for whatever reason, then simply do not do so. This is your choice, just as it is my choice to use this function on some (not all) of my shares that folks may wish to easily see in the 'new posts' listing. PS, just FYI: Another forum which I have been a member of for close to 20 years uses the 'thanks' button not only to unlock hidden content, but also to top-list that thread for new arrivals, showing that it remains active.

RE: [GET] Plot Gardening: Write Faster, Write Smarter
Hello Smithnowt:
1 - I didn't "Insist" on a natural death, to "Insist" would be make it very unnatural wouldn't you agree? 2 - I never said your shares werent appreciated or valuable in and of themselves. I am not questioning your spirit of sharing, that is irrelevant - Your spirit of sharing is a ten ton Oozaru, that cannot be questioned! 3 - When I used "Natural Death" I didn't mean it in the sense of "Offline" - Where did that even come from? We are on an ONLINE forum, what I said applies to the Online Space. That was just a phrase used to convey a concept - I.e- Let the thread die when interest "Naturally" fades. 4 - Don't mistake being "Active" for being "Valuable Or Useful" - Go have a look at the Warrior Forum and come back here and tell me that you still believe that Active is synonymous with Useful. 5- Don't take offense to what I'm saying here I don't say it to attack you. I have no interest in attacking anyone here, we all share the same spirit of entrepreneurship whether some are in the learning phase while others are in the doing phase. What you see as a problem, I also see as a problem: Magic Button : So don't you think that adding post to view threads which add no real content other than thank you's and tire-kicker commentary are adding to the problem? Have you considered that the 90% is being pushed down because there is no current interest in it? If everybody does this with every share then what will the forum look like in a year? Hint: They're still trying to clean up Warrior Forum from all the junk all over the place in it. In Essence: If you want your post to stay alive then add value to it that makes users WANT to engage beyond the simple thank you, make them want to reengage with you. My point is, let your ideas add value and court engagement and that will naturally keep your thread going. You know what the problem with doing that is? It's alot of extra work. You'd have to keep coming up with new things to share across dozens or even hundreds of shares right? So what's the easy way to keep your shares active and pseudo-relevant even when only a sliver of interest remains? How do you keep up with all your shares to keep them at the top? Post To View! There are many threads with less than valuable shares but the thread itself contained so many great ideas for alternatives and other possibilities that the thread became more valuable than the share it presented. You see what I mean? |

Hi J3zr33l.
You wrote: Quote:...You know what the problem with doing that is? It's alot of extra work. You'd have to keep coming up with new things to share across dozens or even hundreds of shares right? So what's the easy way to keep your shares active and pseudo-relevant even when only a sliver of interest remains? How do you keep up with all your shares to keep them at the top? Post To View! Here's the kicker for me - this is my FUN TIME !! I spend too much time and efforts here already and had to restrict this to a specific time of day or I'll just play too much. There is no financial reward in what I do here and frankly I put up WAY more than I get from here just because I enjoy sharing stuff. I've personally known farmers with smaller manure piles than alot of what is posted here. (For sale OR for free...same thing.). Being able to discern between the few good things and the bulk of the BS has taken me some time and I'm still never quite comfortable believing claims even if they come from credible sources. So: Will I be changing this method on some of my shares ?? Nope, so long as it works I'll use it on certain ones. Will I be treating this like some sort of profit-making blog and spending huge efforts posting more and more valuable content on my threads as you suggest ?? Magic Button : Thanks for posting back here in response to my reply. I do very seriously suggest that you aim your very obvious and very good literary skills at doing something VERY profitable instead of here - where you'll most likely get a TL:DR type of response. Best Wishes. smith

RE: [GET] Plot Gardening: Write Faster, Write Smarter
Again Smithnowt, I couldn't agree more. If it weren't for your "Feels" being somehow offended by a simple suggestion or your even more obvious failure in discernment this might have actually been constructive. Have fun and carry on Sir.

Sure, there are still many great posters and those who share great things and a lot of very caring friends -- but the participation and engagement is not like a few years ago! j3zr33l -- you've been around a couple of weeks longer than me (both since Spring 2011) so surely you've noticed. Plus you've got quite a few +Reps so surely you've seen the increased leeching. I don't want to watch BBHF spiral downwards into eventual oblivion. I like Smithnowt's cool innovation . . . and if it's too much trouble for a LEECH who would otherwise just grab a link and never even type "Thanks!" much less bother to hit the +Rep button . . . well, nobody is forcing anyone to participate in any thread. I see this is as a way to at least encourage some level of engagement from folks who would otherwise do nothing but hit-and-run -- grab a link and be off to the next thread. They may get used to posting and find they have even more to offer the community. Smithnowt is a generous VIP and could easily limit shares to the VIP Section . . . which is what an increasing number do . . . but then there are non-VIPs who complain about that as well. |

Time to get out my Gardening Tools for the stories I want to improve upon.
