[GET] Official Guide to UFOs
Quote:This book is a compilation of articles from the magazine Science and Mechanics, dating from 1967, written by Lloyd Mallan, Gordon Evans (who also wrote for Fate, Saucer News and Flying Saucer Review) and Frank Salisbury. The highlights of the book are the illustrated history of unexplained sightings from Project Blue Book and the three part investigation into UFO sightings at Wanaque reservoir, New Jersey in October 1966. There is also a somewhat unsettling short investigative piece on "Ithaca's Terrifying Flying Saucer Epidemic".
The Blue Book files extracts are most interesting. The author writes, "As a representative of S&M I was welcomed at Project Blue Book headquarters and given full cooperation." He spent a week there and the staff made Xerox copies of every file he requested, he says. Cases covered include: Kenneth Arnold; Arnold's friend, Dave Johnson; the case where a UFO landed on a highway and a man with a baseball cap was observed entering it, which was thought to be an experimental craft by Bluebook staff, but that attempts at such explantation proved fruitless; the Socorro incident; the incident at Exeter; a Benton Harbor, Michigan, March 1966 sighting, which had the conclusion "No comment"; the Dale Spaur police UFO chase; the John Reeve UFO landing in the Florida Everglades; the June and July 1965 South Pole sightings by encampments of the British, Argentinian and Chilean governments; the "swamp gas" sighting in Michigan, 1966, where an object "like a football with a dome on top and two whip antennas extending from the bottom, the UFO also had three lights - one at the center and one at each end" was observed; a sighting made by a boy in Scotland where the Bluebook official had written to the boy to state, "Your presentation of this sighting was one of the most complete of all the 'Unidentifieds' of 1963, and we have stated so in our brochure"; a UFO seen over Alaska, where the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute satellite tracking network and the NORAD Space Detection and Tracking System were consulted; a detailed report by a weather observer at a Mississippi Air Force base; a flying egg-shaped craft that stopped a car and caused redness in the face of the observer, in 1958; a report by a USAF Major and an engineering field representative of a UFO observed through a telescope moving from Orion to Sirius; a sighting by a Lt. Col. and a Major that was checked with Space Track at NORAD; a sighting by an aircraft commander of an air-defense radar-surveillance aircraft over the Pacific Ocean, also checked with Space Track at NORAD; a March 1966 sighting by a policeman in Michigan who saw something that stopped his car that was "something far beyond flying stars, planets or swamp gas."
For anyone wanting to know what was in the files of Project Blue Book this is an essential purchase.
