EMDs or Exact Match Domains still works but the update were targeted at the "one page" EMDs that was only created to steal rankings. Also sites that were created with EMD and abandoned or never gets updated. YOU CAN still match with an EMD quicker than you can with other methods given that you update your site with fresh content at least once per week for the first five to six months then you can slow down to once per month because your trust has been established. You probably still won't get overnight rankings though but after a few weeks of consistent updating with proper SEO you'll see results.
