Majestic SEO
has been around for a while. They offer some free services as well as
some paid services. From what I can tell their backlink counts seem to
be inflated compared to others.

Open Site Explorer
is a free option and you can pull data on any site you want. So
basically it operates just like Yahoo site Explorer did. In addition to
the backlink counts they also provide something called page authority
and domain authority. These are on a 0 to 100 range and determine how
strong they are. Open Site Explorer is by SEOmoz.org.

Ahrefs Site Explorer
is free for your first ten requests per day, which then after that you
need to signup. I was told about Ahrefs by a user of Keyword Anchor. I
had never heard of it previously and from what I can tell it may develop
into a standard down the road.

Blekko is another
option we discovered. They are an upcoming search engine that is still
in beta. They provide free backlink counts but there index is pretty
small at the moment. So smaller sites may not be included at this time.

So where does this put us? Well I have been watching to see what
other tool developers have been doing over these last few days. From
what I have seen so far most are moving in the direction of Open Site Explorer.
