What is 505 Odd Enterprises?

This is truly an old-school classic from waaayyy back!

Indeed, many of us reading this right now weren't even born when this tome was written by George W. Haylings.

Haylings was an idea-man who wrote about the unusual, little-known (thus, odd) small business opportunities others were profiting from. These businesses were involved products and services. They were usually home-based, small scale and very profitable because they lacked overhead, the need to hire staff and upfront investment.

And yes, Haylings writes a few paragraphs about all 505 of these little gems. Keep in mind, this was written in 1947 ... by now, some of them have more potential than others; and a few will no longer apply. If you're one to jump to the good stuff, these little-known business descriptions begin on page 15.

And there are 15 chapters plus a supplement.

WARNING: Some may find it a bit difficult to read this book based on Hayling's dated writing style. But try to get through it; it's certainly worth your time.

Here's why ...

505 Odd Enterprises isn't only a classic but (in his own way) Haylings was a kind of genius. He wrote during the Great Depression when it was difficult to make money at all. Yet, he was the equivalent of today's info-preneur. He sold information that gave people hope in a world rife with competition for jobs and business opportunities.

I'll remind you, this was 1947. Haylings lived comfortably in Carlsbad, California. His digs weren't a palace with servants with a shiny new car parked out front but a trailer on a secluded beach where he did not have to pay for "services" like utilities and such. He always had more than enough to meet his needs and loved selling ideas about the ways people could make money running these odd little enterprises.

So, how can you benefit from this share?

If someone who downloads this share will only approach it with an open mind; think outside the box; and harvest just one nugget of wisdom from Haylings' classic that can be re-purposed and re-applied to a business suited for our time, that someone has a great chance to make it big.

Remember, there is nothing new under the sun. Ideas come around and they go around. People re-invent and re-hash existing ideas into new products and services with a little brain-storming and good, creative copywriting.

I bought a copy of 'A Lifetime of Homework' many years ago and yes, it is fair to say that many of the methods in that book are outdated. Technology has made a lot of them obsolete.
To me, the real story here is about how he started and perservered to make it work. I see people all the time complaining about lack of ideas, no information and no way to make $ etc. To put things into perspective, consider this:

Haylings started his business during the depression.
Haylings was living in a tent when he began.
Haylings typed all of his reports on a TYPEWRITER - one by one. No photcopies/pdf's etc.
Haylings didn't have the internet for research. He used his imagination and he observed what people were doing, talked to them and then wrote about it.

He literally started with nothing. He used his ingenuity and hard work to eventually make a very good living and he was proud to say that he never had a conventional 'job'.

To me, that's a story!

It's a shame that threads like this one simply fade-to-black due to lack of forum visitors over time. This thread is from 2017 --- 6 years ago! Yet, George W. Haylings' works flourished during depressions and recessions, when most "level-headed" people figure it's all but impossible to make a sustainably profitable income in your own business.

Well, everything old is new again. Times are tight for a lot of people at the moment. If you didn't see this the first time, grab yourself some of Haylings' cherished wisdom while you can. His stuff is hard to come by.

The timing's right. Everybody is focused on highly competitive niche markets where they all are doing the same thing and very few are profiting like they should.

Maybe it's time you jumped off the bandwagon and become one of the "little fellows" (as Haylings referred to them) who are making big bank doing what no one else is doing.

500 Odd Enterprises gives you plenty of examples of ideas for making money during both difficult and good times that no one else is doing (or doing quite like YOU do it). That's a recipe for riches if you put the right mindset and momentum behind your idea.

Of course, you'll need to put on your thinking cap. Don't just go with these ideas as presented. They all require you to "tweak" them for the present times.

Here's how you can do it...

STEP 1: First, pick an idea.

STEP 2: Strip it down to the bare bones.

STEP 3: Think of all the ways you can add highly creative twists and modern-day turns to its core to create a brilliant, long-term, profitable money-making business that will have little to no competition.

STEP 4: Put all the pieces together to build the enterprise.

STEP 5: Put the word out. Come up with bold and daring ways to promote and market your new business in various media. Create incentives that will get you opt-ins, build buzz and put you at center stage on social media and other platforms. Take your strong marketing messages to the very people who will best benefit --- your target audience.

I apologize for resurrecting a dead thread but Haylings' teachings were so popular back in the day that I couldn't stand to see this thread fizzle out and die simply because of the shiny-new-things being shared.
