Another excellent tool to remove DRM, which does not require a license and is completely free, is the excellent Apprentice Alf's DRM Tools. There are stand-alone versions for Mac, Windows and a plugin for the Calibre eBook manager. I have been using this method for a while and it works great.

Code:
https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/

And be sure to read the instructions on how to install the Calibre plugin. I highly recommend using the Apprentice Alf's plugin with the free Calibre ebook manager with your ebooks because it automatically removes the DRM when you import DRM ebooks.

You can get the excellent Calibre ebook manager here. In my opinion, it is the best way to convert Amazon and mobi books to epub and back. It can also convert Amazon and epub books into PDFs, but I have found this process can be sloppy sometimes.

There are Calibre versions for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Code:
http://calibre-ebook.com/

And if you are looking for a cheap ebook reader, the first generation Nook reader can be purchased on eBay in the $15 - $35 range. This is a basic black and white reader and the good part about this reader is the text is not back-lit so it is easy on the eyes.

REPs appreciated, but certainly not necessary.

roybatty - Missed the offer but didn't know about the dailygiveaway site, so thanks for pointing it out.

twotokes - Thanks for the heads-up on the Calibre plugin. Will give that a try.

I've been using Calibre for nearly four years now and find it to be one of the most useful tools to help keep my chaos organized and accessible. Not just for ebooks. You can make different Libraries, and drill those down to Series with tags. I've taken those .pdfs that come from different courses or programs and loaded them into a Calibre library where I can find at a glance when I need them, rather than digging through the zillions of folders on my computer. Not all the irrelevant or junk .pdfs, obviously, but those I've deemed important to have handy for reference. You can sort by title, author, tags, series, date etc., making documents really easy to find.

(Clearly, the BEST solution is not to collect so much stuff but that is a challenge I've been facing my entire life. At least this lends a little organization to the digital chaos.)

You can also import notes or documents for yourself in Word or .txt format to read later. It's especially helpful to load the Calibre library on my laptop and have every subject accessible to study while traveling.

Gee, I've just talked myself into sending a donation to support the Calibre developer :=)
