Better install a real environment for development at home:
If you are using Windows: This WAMP*/XAMPP/NewEraCr* sounds good
If you prefer reality, go for Linux server at home:

The easy way:
CentOs v6.4 x64 and configure [Reported by Members as SPAM THREAD] for every account + Kloxo-MR with all scripts on it (its like free cpanel)
Then use cvs like gitHub and don't forget to monitor your application resources and tune it before using on a real server, VPS, dedie, shared...

Centos and nginx , the best you can have for low resources vps , Kloxo/lighttpd too much shiit with rewrite rules unless you install mod_magnet

for a stable platform at software level I recommend:
linux distribution (debian, ubuntu LTS)
apache2 (+modules)
php 5.3.2 (stable) + (plugins&modules)
mysql server 5.5
courier (ssl - imap)
postfix (+ clamav spam-​​assassin)

hardware:
AMD 64bit
1.5gb RAM (or more)
160gb hard drive (or higher)

With Kloxo you only need 256Mb of RAM, another VPS I have consumes only 172Mb!!! Yes, its with nginx and all optimized, few sites there, just moving -migrating to my other server- :D
