One thing about the WF is that you should really not take the majority of posters advice there concerning SEO. Most of them think that the only way to rank a site is by building a quality site that will naturally get backlinks built to it by visitors and will get your site ranked in 5 or more years. And most of them think that tools like SENuke, Ultimate Demon, etc, don't work because Google has changed the algo so that they won't anymore.

The method as described above works.

Building authority sites works too... at least in a curated form for broader niches or as single blog for the smaller ones.
To rank authority sites you won't have to rely to blackhat tools either.
Viral posts will spread like wildfire if you built the right connections (to already successful 'competitors') first.
Press releases get you fast exposure too, and the method described above (somewhat gey hat, as you'll sometimes use two accounts on the platform) also gives good traffic.

So, social traffic, especially recommedation traffic from already established authorities in your field is not that bad at all! Even Google nowadays recognizes it as an important ranking signal!
