Backlinking on your own site and rank #1 Must be a joke

If you type in the term "celebrity gossip" in google the #1 ranked site for that very competitive key word is

Well its ranked above perezhilton and all the major sites in this niche so I wondered why. I did some backlink investigating and found out that on every one of there posts/articles there is a backlink anchor for the keyword celebrity gossip linked to thier root domain.

I thought backlinks from your own domain are not an off page factor and will not rank you #1 for any kw but maybe I must be wrong here. Anyone have any info on this strategy?

just index your url and ping your url without overdoing, one of my sub-domain reach the the number one on yahoo,bing and google. just don't blast your url on blogs you will get sandbox. tools that I've use are download and start using but you just need to give your url some time to climb the ranks in the major search engines.
