You will have to keep on trying for a long time by adapting and changing tactics and applying continuously. If you're good at writing, have you tried applying to sites like scripted.com as they pay really good amount per word. There's tons of websites that pay you for writing, editing, proof-reading, etc. And remembder, even if you start SEO writing or selling backlinks, it'll take some time to get going and won't be right away. The free lancing sites might work great for you but I know the start is pretty tough on them. I have been through the same so I would suggest that you buy some reviews to increase the rating and then work your way up slowly and gradually. The effort is a lot but the end result is worth it. Upwork and fiverr both have some amazing content writing jobs. All the best.

You can not rank that fast unless you use a trick. And if you target low comp keywords they are going to be low volume ones. Those can be ranked but won;t make you a lot.
